Successful TrackID by Sony-Ericsson

k810i.jpgAfter a year as an employee in the research project ”Intelligent Sound”, I have sharpened my senses. Not my hearing and not my musical insight, but a sense of difficult machine learning research topics. So, when a good friend of mine bought a new Sony-Ericsson K810i with so-called ”TrackID” capable of finding music titles, I became alert.

The principle is to record a short snip of some music, about say 5 sec. The phone then queries a database and returns an answer telling what song was recorded. Nice idea, but most of those things doesn't really work or there is some kind of annoying catch. But we tried it on the sound from a stereo, and it actually worked. (Heads-up!) Yes, it was indeed able to identify tracks from

Pet Shop Boys
Supertramp
Kashmir (Danish)

supertramp.jpgwere especially Kashmir was interesting being a Danish band with only a moderate international profile. A final test on the Danish rock/folk-music artist CV Jørgensen failed, but I guess it still counts as a success overall.
