Laptops for developing coutries are getting closer to reality

fp__olpc_thumb_small.jpgThe OLPC project (One laptop per child), is getting closer to launch as a working protoype was presented late 2006. OLPC is a non-profit humanitarian high-tech project described by teir own words in the following text found on their website:

"The laptop was designed collaboratively by experts from both academia and industry, bringing to bear both extraordinary talent and many decades of collective field experience in every aspect of this non-profit humanitarian project. The result is a unique harmony of form and function; a flexible, ultra low-cost, power-efficient, responsive, and durable machine with which nations of the emerging world can leapfrog decades of development—immediately transforming the content and quality of their children's learning."

The OLPC is planning to be launched in the followin countries, indicated by thye color codes of the map:

olpcmap.jpg

Green = those countries OLPC plan to pilot
Red = those countries OLPC plan to include in the post-launch phase
Orange = those countries who have expressed interest at the Ministry-of-Education level or higher
Yellow = those countries who are currently seeking government support

When taking a closer look, one can see that Denmark is one of the very few countries not engaged in OLPC at all - a rather depressing fact. Hopefully it expresses that noone really need that kind of support in Denmark, but it could be good publicity for the project. For my part, I would like to buy one myself and would love a setup at which you can be one for yourself for 200$ and thereby give one to someone who really needs it in Brasil, Thailand or whereever.
