HK Observations 6 of 9: Handheld GPS Navigation

During a trip to Hong Kong, I experienced a couple of inspirational machine culture examples. I have described them in a mini-series of postings and this is one of them.

Compared to most other cities I have been to, Hong Kong has a very dense population. It seems almost like all 7 mio inhabitants of the city is on the roads and in the metro constantly walking in and out of each other in a never ending rush-hour. In this sea of humans to and from work (or whatever), I saw a guy staring down at his PDA in his hand while taking sharp turns – I went closer and discovered that he was navigating through the streets using his GPS rather than map or visual orientation. Impressive.
