At 911 ... 2759 ... 10000?

In memory of the terrorist attacks 5 years ago, a number of events in New York and other american cities took place yesterday. The picture below is of the light beams which were placed at ground zero where the twin towers were collapsing in 2001, as a sort of ligth towers - unbreakable by any airplane.

The Danish media is of course filled with comments, documentaries and interviews following the commemoration of the victims and the event which started the much debated war on terror. But the most astonishing thing is the conspiracy culture which has developed around 911 as it has around the lunra landing and other important events. Not that I can completely dismiss the possibility of some of the conspiracy claims are true, but the claims that there were no airplanes at the Pentagon explosion is pretty close to non-sense: Where would one then hide the airplane and all the passengers which died that day? Somewhere in Area51 maybe? I was searching in Google for "911 fact" and up came a number of websites - most of them conspiracy stuff. But one of the top-10 results was 911-Research which has the disclaimer

Disclaimer: 9-11 Research does not promote incivility, junk science, or 'no-jetliner' claims.

So far so good - and there are gazillions of websites with exactly that kind of thoughts: Was it the administration setting it all up so that they could motivate the war on terror in iraq? Well I dislike the Bush-administration as much as any other average European, but it is pretty far fetched. Maybe it is just a consequence of the fact there is always something which is suspicious and humans simply like finding what appear to be patterns.

But when all speculation is over, two important facts of 911 are still there: a) At the September 11, 2759 people died in the attacks on New York and Washington in a terroract commited be people with no respect for human lifes (I still hope Bin Laden will pay some day). b) Assuming that September 11 was not a day statistically too different from other days of the year, about 10000 kids died of hunger and malnutrition.
